CMK08 Day 2




Well, I missed the hands-on work yesterday during my webinar with principals in St. Clair County.  The good part is that the webinar was great.  I think it allowed our administrators to be exposed to the concepts of 21st Century skills as well as exposure to tools they might use.  We had good questions and decent interactivity for a virtual presentation.  The bad part is that I missed the awesome hands-on work today.  I came back and saw people doing claymation, lego robotics, Scratch game projects, and many more.  I am fired up about what I am going to learn today.  Isn’t that what we would like all of our teachers and peers to say, “I am fired up about learning.”  This conference has really cemented the idea that there has to be a transition from “What am I teaching?” to “What are they learning?” I would argue that the question needs to be “What are WE learning?”

My goal for today is to jump in and start working with some manipulatives and make some connections with that project and the objectives/big ideas I am using with my 10th and 11th graders.  What will I learn today?  Experiences… the rhythm of projects… lack of success does not equal failure.

Gary’s talk on Projectness:

Making things is better than being passive-  Making good things is even better!  Richness… you can hammer nails with a trumpet, but it may not be the best tool for the job.

Elements of a project:

  • purpose
  • time
  • personally meaningful
  • complexity including serendipity (teachable moment)
  • connected- people and disciplines
  • shareable
  • access and constructive materials
  • the folks in Reggio Emilia know (safety, peer guidance, constraints- be authentic

Questions worth asking-

  • Is the problem solvable?
  • Is the project monumental or substantial?
  • What can the kids do with it?

An artist’s aesthetic!  beautiful, thoughtful, personally meaningful, sophisticated, shareable (with respect for the audience), moves you, enduring

Four ways to use materials:  teach a concept, thematic project, curricular theme, freestyle
