I have just completed two rich days of learning at the Alabama Educators Technology Conference (AETC). I have either presented alone or been a part of a presentation team for the past several years. This year I just went as a learner. It was such a pep rally for learning. I always leave there in awe at what I learn but more in awe at what so many of my colleagues are just now beginning to learn. I have to remember that tools that have become such a normal part of my digital life are still so new to my colleagues. I will post over the next few days some of the information I learned at these sessions complete with links.

The Keynote Speaker was Tim Tyson, principal of Mabry Middle School, and technology evangelist. He really fired everyone up about making technology an integral part of our curriculum choices. He helped me to remember that I need to be teaching my students more than English. By watching the videos created by 7th graders, I saw them taking important topics in the real world and it made me know I had to take up that torch with my students next year. I am actively searching for something to connect to the curriculum for next year.

The Chiquita Marbury Technology Innovation Award was given, and I was proud to see my good friend Jennifer Barnett from Fayetteville High School be rewarded for all of her effort and hard work. She is awesome and so deserving of this. I heard wonderful speeches by all of the recipients, but the best thing was to hear all of them sing the praises of their administrations and teachers who all support and foster technology integration. It is so difficult to take risks and do things differently without this support. It is much easier just to sit at your desk and let the students work on seat work. Easy does not equal learning. Lecturing does not equal learning. Teaching, facilitating, discussing, moving, collaborating, and creating equals real learning.

I am so excited to be a part of a state that is trying to move forward and change the image of the old South.
